George Harrison is in hospital after being stabbed in the chest by an intruder at his home.
The 56-year-old ex-Beatle and his wife Olivia tackled an intruder after being woken by the sound of broken glass at their Henley-On-Thames mansion in the early hours of this morning (Thursday 30 December 1999).
A man, believed to be a 33-year-old from Liverpool, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. It is thought the couple managed to detain the man until police arrived.
Police believe the attack was deliberate rather than a burglary gone wrong. It comes almost exactly 19 years after John Lennon was shot dead outside his home in New York.
Hospital reports state that although the blade pierced George Harrison‘s chest it missed all major organs and his life was never in danger.
According to BBC reports, the couple were deeply traumatised by the attack, although Harrison told a spokesman for the Royal Berkshire Hospital that the man “wasn’t a burglar but that he certainly wasn’t auditioning for the Travelling Wilburys“. On hearing the news Paul McCartney said: “Thank god that both George and Olivia are alright. I send them all my love.”
