Fans in Wrexham - and NME.COM - are treated to several highlights from the forthcoming 'Wonderland', despite frontman Tim Burgess' dicky throat...
THE CHARLATANS played their first gig since 1999 at 600-capacity WREXHAM CENTRAL last night (June 28), premiering five new songs from their forthcoming album ‘WONDERLAND’.
Tickets for the event, which were made available through the fan club and local outlets, sold out within an hour of going on sale.
Frontman Tim Burgess performed the set despite a persistent throat problem, apologising for his “dehydrated throat” and saying he was sorry for not giving a full performance, although he made it through the set without any apparent major difficulties. “I’ve been trying, I’m going to have to change things around a bit, it’s fucking hard, but it’s beautiful,” he commented.
Two of the new songs from ‘Wonderland’, which is slated for an early September release, were included in the first three songs of the set. One was new single ‘Love Is The Key’, being given its first live airing, the other being ‘Judas’. Both tracks showed a marked change of direction within the band, with less emphasis on organ and more on guitar, with Burgess singing falsetto at some parts and displaying more vocal range.
Other new tracks included the funky ‘If I Fall’, and ‘Is It In U?’, the first song of the encore.
Speaking to NME.COM after the show, Burgess said he had been embarrassed about disappointing fans with his voice, but said he thoroughly enjoyed the band’s first gig in 18 months.
“We’ve not played live for a while, and Wrexham seemed as good a place to start as any. We’re doing this as a warm-up for a festival in Greece next week, then we’re back off to LA.”
The band fly to Burgess’ home city of Los Angeles next week to record a video for ‘Love Is The Key’, which is released at the end of August. Keyboardist Tony Rogers said the video would have “an enemy of the state vibe”.
The set-list ran:
‘Love Is The Key’
‘North Country Boy’
‘You’re So Pretty, We’re So Pretty’
‘One To Another’
‘If I Fall’
‘The Blind Stagger’
‘Is It In U?’
