The Clash pop-up store to open in London

Black Market Clash will feature an exhibition of rare band memorabilia and artifacts

A pop up store celebrating the work of The Clash is set to open next month in London.

The Black Market Clash store will mark the remastered releases of the ‘The Clash Hits Back’ compilation and the ‘Sound System’ boxset, which contains all of the band’s studio albums. The store will be open from September 7-22 at 75 Berwick Street, Soho. The pop-up will also display items from the Clash archive, including instruments, stagewear, rare memorabilia and original manuscripts.

Art directed and curated by the band and Robert Gordon McHarg lll of The Subway Gallery, the store will be hosting film and video of the band, with the memorabilia and artifact exhibition downstairs, whilst limited items will be for sale on the ground floor.

The store will open on September 6 with an exclusive launch event, which will be attended by the band.

Of the upcoming releases, Mick Jones said: “Remastering’s a really amazing thing. That was the musical point of it all, because there’s so much there that you wouldn’t have heard before. It was like discovering stuff, because the advances in mastering are so immense since the last time [The Clash back catalogue] was remastered in the ’90s… We had to bake the tapes beforehand – the oxide on them is where the music is, so if you don’t put them in the oven and bake them, that all falls off, because they’re so old.”

The 33-track, 2CD ‘The Clash Hits Back’ compilation is inspired by the band’s performance at what is now the O2 Academy Brixton in July 1982. The box set and the CD compilation will both be released on September 9.

The three surviving members of The Clash‘s classic line-up are to come together for an exclusive BBC Radio 6 Music show next month. Mick Jones, Paul Simonon and Topper Headon will be interviewed by Cerys Matthews in front of an intimate audience of fans at the BBC’s Maida Vale Studios in west London. During the course of the show, the trio will also take questions from the audience.

The show will be pre-recorded on September 6 before being broadcast on BBC Radio 6 Music shortly after on a date to be confirmed. Fans have until midday on August 25 to apply for tickets and more information is available at the station’s website.
