Maybe the anonymous figure could give the cash to charity instead eh?...

Bookmakers LADBROKES today turned down a £1 million bet from a ‘senior music industry figure’ for the BAND AID 20 single hitting the Christmas Number One.

They claim the anonymous figure tried to put the million on the track – recorded over the weekend at London’s Air Studios – even though its odds are only 1/5.

Spokesman Warren Lush said: “The customer tried to stake £1million on Band Aid at odds of 1/5 but we turned down the bet. We offered him the opportunity to place a smaller bet but he said it was £1million or nothing.

“If he were to have had the bet he would have won £200,000, taking home £1.2million. he remarked that it was better interest than that offered by a bank or building society.

“We didn’t take the bet as it seems like it will take a miracle for it not to go to Number One. The customer wishes to stay anonymous at this stage.”

The current odds for Christmas Number One are:

Band Aid 20 – 1/8 from 1/5.

Ronan Keating and Cat Stevens – 10/1

‘The X Factor’ winner – 16/1

The Undertones – 25/1

Ricky Gervais and Noel Gallagher – 25/1

Kylie Minogue – 25/1

Madonna – 25/1

Paul Holt – 25/1

Westlife – 25/1

Girls Aloud – 25/1

Bar – 33/1
