Singer lashes out at 'pointless' Olly Murs and co
The Enemy‘s Tom Clarke has claimed that music festivals in 2012 were dominated by “hapless karaoke cretins”.
Speaking to the Daily Record, the singer said that the line-up for bashes in the UK were overrun by “pointless” singers such as Olly Murs and other “no-name trendy weirdos”.
The Coventry trio released their new studio album ‘Streets In The Sky’ earlier this year but, after Clarke described the pop charts as being “full of shit” in May, his views on the UK’s musical landscape seemingly haven’t improved.
“Hapless karaoke cretins. That’s my summary of the 2012 festival season,” he said. “Olly Murs playing The Clash, The Jam and Supergrass at this year’s festivals… why not just book Supergrass? All these current trendy artists must get booked and then remember they don’t have any of their own songs. Then they panic and think, ‘What do people at festivals want? Bands.’ So then they cover some bands. Pointless. Write some songs.”
He went on to add:
Pop should be great. It should be fun. But right now, it’s just no-name trendy weirdos singing other people’s songs badly. I despair.
Clarke also admitted that he has tried to reduce his public rants, adding: “I’m fairly outspoken and, at times, too outspoken. That’s me. It’s a balancing act between my personality and the band. If you talk too much, people are too interested in that. We needed to make the music do the talking.”
