Flaming Lips set for Broadway?

Wayne Coyne confirms plans for a Broadway musical

The Flaming Lips have announced they are to team up with ‘The West Wing’ creator Aaron Sorkin to turn their 2002 album ’Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots’ into a Broadway musical.

The project will be overseen by Tony Award-winning director/producer Des McAnuff, whose previous ventures include The Who classic ’Tommy’.

Speaking to ew.com, singer Wayne Coyne explained: “When Des heard the record, he heard a lot about death and loss and the triumph of your own optimism… he had an emotional attachment to it.

“I tell people all the time, it’s not really a story. It’s more like a mood. There’s a Japanese girl; she fights some robots; that’s five minutes. After that I don’t know.”

There has been no confirmation of the musical’s debut, nor has a plot been specified yet.
