The Flaming Lips reveal ‘devastating’ inspiration behind their new album

'The Terror' is set for release this autumn

The Flaming Lips have spoken out about their forthcoming new album, which has the working title ‘The Terror’.

Talking to Rolling Stone, frontman Wayne Coyne revealed the somewhat bleak circumstances in which the record was conceived.

Coyne says that the album was started while Steven Drozd of the band was in the middle of a serious drug addiction, from which he has now recovered. Coyne says: “It was probably the worst time of his life. I knew he was really, really struggling. He was in a bad way.”

Coyne explains that Drozd holed himself up in a different studio to the rest of the band to work on his own “horribly creepy” tracks. Coyne adds: “He did this one piece of music and did lyrics, all these things. Not all the pieces were audible, but he had these things saying ‘you are alone,’ and then the other voice saying, ‘I am not alone.’ Back and forth between some horrible internal dialogue. It was truly devastating.”

Many of the melodies which Drozd wrote will make up the album, which is set for an autumn release.

The Flaming Lips recently released a collaborative album, titled ‘The Flaming Lips And Heady Fwends’, which brought together an eclectic group of artists including Bon Iver, Ke$ha, Nick Cave, My Morning Jacket and Yoko Ono.

The band have also confirmed full details of the musical which is based around their 2002 album ‘Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots’. The production, which has been directed and put together by Des McAnuff, will run from November 6 to December 16 at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, California.
