The Flaming Lips praise the ‘beautiful freaks’ of Bestival

Wayne Coyne's band headline second night on the Isle Of Wight

The Flaming Lips brought the second day of Bestival to a euphoric climax last night (September 11).

The psych-rock superstars headlined the main stage at Robin Hill Park as the Isle Of Wight bash enjoyed its annual fantasy-themed fancy dress parade.

Wayne Coyne emerged from a giant zorbing ball and went on to preside over a celebratory set packed with special effects, visuals and glitter cannons.

And as they powered through a kaleidoscopic set of hits like ‘Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (Pt 1)’ and ‘She Don’t Use Jelly’, Coyne was visibly moved by the spectacle, shouting out to all the “beautiful freaks” in the audience.

He declared: “I hope this festival carries on for a hundred years, and that you have us back every couple of years or so,” before ending the show with an epic rendition of ‘Do You Realize??’

Warming up for the headliners were the reformed Roxy Music, who put in a lavish, prog-tinged set, which climaxed with their cover of John Lennon‘s ‘Jealous Guy’, a UK chart-topper for them in 1981.

Bestival concludes tonight with a headline set from The Prodigy.
