O2 NME Rock’n’Roll Riot Tour 2006 explodes into action

Black paint and blown-up amps on first night

The Fratellis had an explosive start on the opening night of the O2 NME Rock’n’Roll Riot Tour 2006, at Leeds University last night (October 10).

With the crowd chanting the riff to ’Chelsea Dagger’ before they took the stage, the band were in high spirits, playing most of their debut ’Costello Music’ including singles ’Creeping Up The Backstairs’ and ’Henrietta’.

However disaster almost struck one song in when one of the band’s amp exploded during opener ‘Creepin’ Up The Backstairs’ causing a brief pause.

“The crowd really loved it,” frontman Jon Fratelli told NME.COM afterwards, “and that’s what mattered!”

Brighton-based five-piece, The Maccabees stormed their appearence, with the likes of ’Lego’, ’Latchemere’ and ’X Ray’.

While Glasgow newcomers The Dykeenies overcame any possible nerves of playing their biggest gig to date, with an assured performance.
