The tribute was paid to mark the year anniversary of the feminist punk group's jail sentencing
The Knife paid tribute to jailed feminist punk collective Pussy Riot during their show at Belgium’s Pukkelpop festival this week (Aug 17).
Combining forces with Tarek Halaby, the ‘Absurdist Aerobics’ instructor who has been opening up for the Swedish group throughout their current ‘Shaking the Habitual’ tour, the band took to the stage dressed as members of Pussy Riot to read an impassioned speech dedicated to the imprisoned group.
As well as demanding the immediate release of Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Halaby also led a special anti-authoritarian version of his Absurdist Aerobics performance, culminating in a communal chant of “Free Pussy Riot! We Are All Pussy Riot!”.
August 17 marked a year to the day since Pussy Riot were first sentenced, following a performance of their anti-Putin ‘punk prayer’ at the Cathedral of Christ The Savior in Moscow in February 2012.

Last month it was decided that a request for Pussy Riot member Maria Alyokhina’s parole would be denied. Alyokhina had previously gone on an 11-day hunger strike after being denied permission to attend her initial parole hearing. She and Tolokonnikova are currently serving two year sentences for breach of public order motivated by religious hatred.
