The National say they won’t release new album in 2016

Band released last album 'Trouble Will Find Me' in 2013

The National have distanced themselves from reports that they are readying their next album for release.

Frontman Matt Berninger recently issued an update on the recording sessions for their next album, describing their new songs as “very fucking amazing”.

However, now Berninger has stated that the album could take longer than previously thought.

Yesterday saw Beringer sit down for a live Facebook Q&A with fans, with the singer saying that while the band plan to play new songs live in the near future, a new album will not be released in 2016.

Berninger had previously told Stereogum that the band are writing more songs together as a band. He said: “I think we’re actually writing in a room together more than we ever did. We’re excited about that. It’s changing the National, the way we’re doing it.”

Guitarist Aaron Dessner added: “We’re not afraid, I think, to write hooks now,” before he described the new songs as “a bit razory, brighter” and “a little bit harsher.”

The National recently showcased new song ‘Roman Candle’ live at the Troubadour in Los Angeles in benefit of the Cooperative For Education charity.

The US band released their last album, ‘Trouble Will Find Me’, in 2013. Berninger recently announced new band El Vy, a collaboration with former Menomena musician Brent Knopf.
