The National staged a ‘reverse stage invasion’ during their Glastonbury set this evening (June 26).
Playing the Other Stage, frontman Matt Berninger turned the tables and dived into the crowd himself during ‘Squalor Victoria’.
Continuing to sing, the frontman nearly made it to the mixing desk as he was slapped on the back by fans and even squirted with a water pistol.
Following the audience’s acclaim Berninger then joked about the band’s recent success, scoring a UK top Five with new album ‘High Violet’ after 10 years of hard graft and touring.
“This what it looked like in our heads 10 years ago. In our brains,” Berninger told the crowd. “It was a little darker and there were more girls in the front, but this is it.”
The frontman also found time to joke about the band’s gloomy reputation, and how they may have suited an evening slot.
“Ah look at that sunset, beautiful,” he joked, pointing at the sun which was still blazing high in the sky. He added: “Make a wish.”
Towards the end of the set Berninger was back in the crowd again, this time during ‘Mr November’, before the band ended the set with ‘Terrible Love’.
The National played:
‘Mistaken For Strangers’
‘Anyone’s Ghost’
‘Bloodbuzz Ohio’
‘Slow Show’
‘Squalor Victoria’
‘I’m Afraid Of Everyone’
‘Conversation 16’
‘Abel’
‘Apartment Story’
‘England’
‘Fake Empire’
‘Mr November’
‘Terrible Love’
