Pogues guitarist diagnosed with throat cancer

Philip Chevron's condition is

The Pogues guitarist Philip Chevron has been diagnosed with “locally advanced” throat cancer, according to the band’s website.

Chevron, who wrote the emigration-themed track ‘Thousands Are Sailing’ will not be present for the band’s summer and fall shows this year.

The following message was posted on [url=http://www.pogues.com]pogues.com:

“At the beginning of June Philip was unexpectedly diagnosed with a strand of “locally advanced” throat cancer which requires immediate medical attention. Though it is not yet known when Chevron will return to live work, it is hoped that he will again be available towards the end of this year.”

The band are due to tour the US later this year.
