The Rolling Stones cover The White Stripes!

They're joined on stage by Italian World Cup Stars

The Rolling Stones were joined onstage by Italian World Cup winners as they finally started the European leg of their ’A Bigger Bang’ World Tour last night (June 11) in Milan.

The jaunt was postponed for six weeks due to guitarist Keith Richards suffering from a brain injury after falling from a palm tree in Fiji in April.

After their final song The Rolling Stones were joined onstage at the San Siro Stadium by Marco Materazzi and Alessandro Del Piero, members of the World Cup winning Italian football team.

Materazzi, who scored in the final on Sunday (July 9) and was also involved in the incident where French captain Zinedine Zidane was sent off, led the crowd in an a capella version of The White Stripes‘Seven Nation Army’, but substituted the original lyrics for “we are the champions” in Italian.

Over 70,000 fans attended the concert, many waving Italian flags and some waving inflatable palm trees. They were treated to an Italian language version of ‘As Tears Go By’, ‘Con Le Mie Lacrime’, the first time the song has been performed by the band for over 31 years, according to the band.

The Stones also performed a cover of Ray Charles‘Night Time Is The Right Time’ as well as their staple hits ‘It’s Only Rock and Roll’ and ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’.

The concert marked Keith Richards‘ return to the stage after having brain surgery in New Zealand in May. Although Richards appeared frail during some of the opening numbers he joked “It’s good to be here, it’s good to be anywhere,” and sang lead vocals for ‘Before They Make Me Run’ and ‘Slipping Away’. He also made an energetic run to one side of the 100 Foot stage to the centre during their rendition of ‘Sympathy for the Devil’.

The full setlist was:

‘Jumping Jack Flash’

‘It’s Only Rock and Roll’

‘Oh No Not You Again’
