Johnny Marr: ‘Inspiring people to go vegetarian is one of my proudest moments’

Guitarist reveals how people still tell him that The Smiths' 'Meat Is Murder' converted them

Johnny Marr has revealed that inspiring people to go vegetarian is one of his proudest moments.

In a new book by Neil Taylor called Document and Eyewitness: An Intimate History of Rough Trade, the guitarist explained how even today fans will cite The Smiths‘ 1985 album ‘Meat Is Murder’ as the reason they stopped eating meat.

“I am very proud of the fact that 20 years [sic] on people tell me they became a vegetarian as a result of ‘Meat is Murder’,” he said. “I think that is quite literally rock music changing someone’s life – it’s certainly changing the life of animals. It is one of the things I am most proud of.”

As previously reported, Johnny Marr recently performed the film score for Inception along with Hans Zimmer and a 20-piece orchestra in Los Angeles.
