The Specials trombonist Rico Rodriguez dies aged 80

The musician famously appeared on the band's hit 'A Message To You Rudy'

Ska and reggae musician Rico Rodriguez, a member of The Specials, has passed away at the age of 80.

The trombonist joined the 2 Tone revival band in 1979, appearing on their cover of Dandy Livingstone’s ‘A Message To You Rudy’.

Rodriguez, who was born in Cuba but moved to Jamaica as a child, was also a solo artist, releasing his 1977 album ‘Man From Wareika’ prior to joining The Specials. He also played with Jools Holland’s Rhythm & Blues Orchestra.

The Specials confirmed the news of Rodriguez’s death in a tweet, writing, “Our dear friend Rico passed away today. We offer our deepest condolences to his family. His legacy will go on forever and a day. RIP dear Rico”.

Rodriguez was awarded an MBE for services to music in 2007. He passed away in London on Friday (September 4).
