GINGER SPICE's disappearing act has triggered widespread UK media speculation that the Spice Girls' career is foundering...
THE SPICE GIRLS‘ future is the subject of massive media speculation in Britain today (Friday, May 29) after Geri ‘Ginger Spice’ Halliwell (pictured) missed a British TV appearance and a concert in Norway.
The four other Spice Girls appeared minus Geri on Wednesday’s edition of the National Lottery Live TV show and the first of two Norwegian shows in Oslo on Thursday night.
A spokesperson for the group says Geri, who will also miss another live date in Norway tonight (Friday), is ill with a stomach bug, and rumours that she is leaving the band or is about to be fired are untrue. The spokesperson also adds the band are taking next week off for holidays, but this has been planned for some time.
The story has been prominent on daytime television news broadcasts after British tabloids jumped on Geri’s non-appearance at Wednesday’s National Lottery draw show. Friday’s edition of The Mirror claims Halliwell has been threatened by other band members with the sack after throwing a tantrum. The paper also surmises the band’s internal problems are based on Geri’s desire for a solo career.
Speculation has been rising in recent months that tensions within the group – who have already faced drama over the sacking of their manager, Simon Fuller, last year – will break the group apart.
Earlier this week, Ginger Spice spoke to a British tabloid about her breast cancer scare, for which she underwent an emergency operation when she was 18.
