Manchester four-piece also reveal plans to play T In The Park in July 2016
The Stone Roses have announced two massive headline shows at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium next summer.
The band will play the stadium on Friday June 17 and 18. Tickets will go on sale at 9.30am this Friday (November 6).
The Manchester four-piece have also announced plans to headline next year’s T In The Park on July 8. The announcement was made on their Facebook and Twitter page this evening at 7pm (see below).
The news comes after posters of lemons appeared in record stores across Manchester this morning (November 2). Images of the lemon, which has appeared on the band’s posters and album artwork in the past, appeared around the city with sightings confirmed at Close barber’s shop on Greater Ancoats Street and the Vinyl Revival record store on Hilton Street.
A spokesperson from Manchester’s Vinyl Revival shop earlier told NME that an announcement will be made within the “next 24 hours”.
Later, details of a new touring company registered by Ian Brown, John Squire, Gary Mounfield and Alan Wren were made available by the government’s Companies House website.
Man Touring Limited was registered by the four names, the same names as the band members, on October 29.
Eagle-eyed fans spotted that there were 16 lemons used in the Manchester poster campaign and speculated that this meant an announcement about 2016 was imminent.
Manchester musicians Liam Fray (The Courteeners) and Tim Burgess of The Charlatans also tweeted about the posters, leading some fans to ask if all three bands will play live together. Other persistent rumours were that of a Glastonbury headline slot and the band’s long-awaited third album.
Gordon Smart, editor of The Scottish Sun, speculated that two gigs at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium could be in the pipeline. “I’ve felt a disturbance in the force @thestonerosesofficial blue seats, two nights, baggy jeans and a beanie hat…”, he wrote on Instagram.
The Stone Roses are also now second favourites to headline next year’s Glastonbury Festival, according to bookmakers Betfair.
The band are now listed behind Adele as among the bookies’ top tips to headline the Saturday leg of the Worthy Farm event in 2016.
Colm Rock of Betfair said: “The odds of the Stone Roses to headline the Saturday at Glastonbury have plummeted from 10/1 to 7/2 second favourites.”
The Stone Roses were famously booked to headline Glastonbury Festival in 1995, with Pulp filling in for the band at the last minute.
