Shane Meadows: ‘When The Stone Roses fell out in Amsterdam it made me physically sick’

'This Is England' director also tells NME forthcoming film 'Made Of Stone' is not like Metallica's 'Some Kind Of Monster'

Shane Meadows director of the forthcoming The Stone Roses documentary Made Of Stone has told NME the band’s spat in Amsterdam last year made him “feel physicaly sick”.

The This Is England director said the incident which saw frontman Ian Brown dub drummer Reni “a cunt” after he walked offstage at Heineken Music Hall on June 12, last year made him decide that he didn’t want to make a film like Metallica’s Some Kind Of Monster. The documentary goes behind the scenes of the Manchester band’s 2012 reunion, from the early stages to their celebratory hometown gigs at Heaton Park.

Speaking in this week’s issue of the NME, he said: “When all that stuff happened it made me feel physically sick. I hated it. I did the opposite of what most filmmakers would do: turned my cameras off, put my crew in a room and said that if anyone tries to sneak out they’re off the job. We’ve all seen it a million times, like the classic Metallica documentary (Some Kind Of Monster) which I love when they’re all in fucking counselling but it’s a bit Spinal Tap. I was setting out to watch the rebirth of my favourite band of all time. I’m not Michael Moore trying to expose the president.”

At the time Brown returned to the stage at the end of the gig and told the crowd: “The drummer’s gone home… I’m not joking, the drummer’s gone home. Get all your aggro out on me, I can take it.” He added: “What can I say, the drummer’s a cunt.” You can watch footage of the incident below.
