Ending months of speculation the starsailors go their separate ways...

The Verve have finally split. The agreement is mutual.

It has been officially confirmed that Richard Ashcroft is working on a new album, as previously reported on

Rumours of a split began with reports of internal rows whiich culminated in Nick McCabe‘s decision not to finish the US and European tours last summer.

“The decision to split the band did not come without a great deal of distress to me personally,” said Richard in an official release. “I have always given everything to the band and would have continued to do so if circumstances had not made it impossible.

“I would like to thank fans for their loyal support and their phenomenal response to ‘Urban Hymns’. I feel more positive now a decision has been made – being in limbo isn’t good for the soul. I can now move forward and put my energies into new songs for a new album.”

There is no confirmed details of tracks or release date for the new Richard Ashcroft material.

Bass player, Simon Jones says: “The remainder of the band – myself, Nick McCabe, Simon Tong – are continuing to work on our own projects, while Pete Salisbury is currently working on Richard‘s new album. The rest of the band might even work with each other in the future. If this happens, it won’t be as The Verve.”

There will be more news on this story on as it happens.
