The Weeknd arrested following alleged assault on Las Vegas police officer

Canadian artist was arrested on one count of misdemeanor battery of a protected person on January 10

The Weeknd was arrested over the weekend after allegedly assaulting a police officer in Las Vegas.

The R&B artist, real name Abel Tesfaye, was arrested on one count of misdemeanor battery of a protected person on January 10 following an incident at the Cromwell Hotel in Las Vegas.

As Billboard reports, Tesfaye was allegedly involved in an incident in the early hours of the morning. Laura Meltzer, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department public information officer, said it was unclear whether the original altercation was a physical fight or verbal, but when police arrived to investiaget, Tesfaye struck an officer in the side of the head with a closed fist.

The Weeknd released his latest album, ‘Kiss Land’, in 2013. He shared two previously unheard songs, ‘King Of The Fall’ and ‘Often’, in July 2014.

His most recent track, ‘Earned It’, will appear on the soundtrack to the upcoming movie adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey. Material by Beyonce, The Rolling Stones, Sia and Ellie Goulding also appear on the film’s soundtrack.

The Fifty Shades of Grey film is scheduled to open in cinemas on February 13 – right in time for Valentine’s Day. It has been rated ‘R’ in the US for “strong sexual content and unusual behaviour”.
