After the killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile by police in July, Tesfaye tweeted: “Enough is enough. it’s time to stand up for this. we can either sit and watch, or do something about it. the time is now. #blacklivesmatter.”

He also tweeted the hashtag “#BLUELIVESMURDER.”

Last week, it was reported that Tesfaye had donated $50,000 (£38,000) to the University Of Toronto to fund a new Ethiopic Studies program.
