WHITE LIE?

Rumours grow that the press-shy Detroit duo were once man and wife rather than brother and sister...

THE WHITE STRIPES‘ JACK and MEG WHITE are rumoured to have split up. In fact, they may have split up as long ago as last year.

Don’t worry, though, because you’ll still be able to see them play again in the UK in November. Because the band The White Stripes are still very much a going concern.

According to reports from the US, the band’s supposed sibling members, singer/guitarist Jack White and drummer Meg White, were once married. Reports suggest the couple split up last year, ending a four-year marriage.

Curiously, it’s also rumoured that 25-year-old Jack, whose real name is John Gillis, took his wife Meg’s last name of White. The couple are said to have divorced last year, but as The White Stripes they decided to pass themselves off as brother and sister to draw attention away from their personal relationship.

If the rumours are true, we too have been stung by the image conscious duo, who famously dress only in red and white and refuse most interview requests. Earlier this month, we even asked them outright about the rumours.

Speaking exclusively to NME.COM, Jack was adamant that they were telling the truth.

He insisted: “We’re brother and sister. Someone started a rumour about how we used to be married and we played along with it. That was a bad idea, we get asked this all the time now.”
