The Who‘s Roger Daltrey has admitted that his collaboration with Foo Fighters at last night’s (February 23) Shockwaves NME Awards was decided “on the spot”.

Daltrey sang lead vocals on Dave Grohl‘s band’s cover of ‘Young Man Blues’, made famous by The Who on their ‘Live At Leeds’ album. The performance came shortly after the Foos frontman had collected his Godlike Genius award at the O2 Academy Brixton bash.

“They play it in their show sometimes, ‘Young Man Blues’, and [Grohl] said, ‘Would you sing it?’,” Daltrey explained. “That’s what rock’n’roll used to be like, when people used to just get up and make it up on the spot. Which is what we did tonight – I hope we didn’t show up too much!”

Daltrey also praised PJ Harvey as “fabulous”, after she picked up the Teenage Cancer Trust Outstanding Contribution To Music. He is a patron for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Speaking of the forthcoming Teenage Cancer Trust gigs in London’s Royal Albert Hall, Daltrey revealed what he’ll be playing in his solo show, set for March 24.

“It’s the best of ‘Live At Leeds’ and ‘Tommy’, so that will be a first for me, because I’ve never done a solo show in England,” he said. Asked how he was feeling ahead of the solo show, Daltrey replied: “I’m shitting meself!”
