Wombats’ Matthew Murphy: ‘I’ve recovered from pill addiction’

Singer says anti-depressants made him 'a mess'

The Wombats frontman Matthew Murphy has admitted this morning (April 4) that he overcame an addiction to prescription anti-depressants during the making of the band’s new album ‘This Modern Glitch’.

Speaking to The Sun, Murphy described himself as “a mess” as a result of his drug taking.

He said: “I first started taking medication before our first single came out. Then, once we were touring, I was taking quite high dosages and they just kept going up and up.”

Murphy went onto say that he only managed to get over the addiction after he began to put on weight, adding: “I started putting on a lot of weight. That was the main reason I wanted to come off them. I hated going on stage and feeling fat.”

‘This Modern Glitch’ is set for release on April 25.
