Solange played two shows at London’s XOYO venue this week in support of her new EP ‘True’, and for the second of the gigs she paired up with Sim for a cover of ‘Make It Hot’, a 1998 single by Nicole Wray. “I’d like to take a second and introduce – and have some fun with – one of my really good friends,” said the singer before introducing The xx member to the crowd.
In November last year, Solange hosted a listening party for ‘True’ at The xx’s exhibition space in LA. The singer and her producer, Dev Hynes, took over the space at Sonos Studio in Hollywood and played the material to a crowd which included former Destiny’s Child vocalist Kelly Rowland and Cerebal Ballzy frontman Honor Titus. The venue had previously been used by The xx for their Missing art exhibition, which featured 50 robotic music players which follow the movement of visitors.
Solange released ‘True’ digitally in November last year, and on CD and vinyl earlier this month (January 8). Blood Orange and Lightspeed Champion man Hynes also helped co-write the EP, with Solange describing him as “such an amazing friend to me”. The pair are expected to work together again in the future, with Solange also set to release a full-length LP later this year.
The xx, meanwhile, released their second studio LP ‘Coexist’ last year. The record went on to become the best-selling vinyl album in the UK during 2012.
