The Zutons play surprise homecoming gig

Liverpool's locals perform secret show

The Zutons played to hundreds at a top secret homecoming gig at the Pier Head in Liverpool on Saturday (20 May).

Currently in the middle of an almost sold out UK tour, the band played a hit-laden set for the crowd who had been kept in the dark as to the gig’s location until three hours before kick-off.

The free event was the only gig that the band – who reached Number Two in the charts with second album ‘Tired Of Hanging Around’ – will play in Liverpool their current tour and was filmed as part of Vodafone’s TBA series of free gigs.

Frontman Dave McCabe questioned the crowd on the gig’s secrecy. “How many of you have known about this all week?” he asked to be greeted by a sea of hands.

Gig-goers had been alerted to the gig’s location via text messages. Those wishing to go to the gig had been asked to wait in the city centre with more information to follow.

The band’s hour long set incorporated tracks from their new album including next single ‘Valerie’ and fan favourite ‘Hello Conscience’

The setlist ran:

’Zuton Fever’

‘Dirty Dancehall’

‘Pressure Point’

‘Remember Me’

‘Tired Of Hangin’ Around’

‘How Does It Feel’

‘Don’t Ever Think (Too Much)’

‘Hello Conscience’

‘Confusion’

‘Valerie’

‘Why Won’t You Give Me Your Love?’

‘You Will, You Won’t’

The show will be broadcast next Friday (May 26) on Channel 4.

Meanwhile the band, who are on tour till the end of the month, will release new single ‘Valerie’ on June 19.
