Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood is set to leave St Thomas’s Hospital in Waterloo today where he has been under armed police guard since being shot on Sunday night.
Westwood underwent an operation yesterday to clean the entry and exit wound in his arm. He will then see a consultant before being released.
In a statement he said: “I thank God I’m alive and that everyone has survived. Everybody at the hospital has been great and I feel fine.”
Police are still keeping an open mind on the motives behind the shooting and indeed as to whether Westwood was the actual target of the gunmen. There were also reports that witnesses saw the DJ’s Land Rover followed from Brockwell Park. It’s also been reported by witnesses that the mood in the park during Westwood‘s set there was ugly.
There has been speculation in some newspapers that the shooting was linked to Yardie gang wars over control of the club scene where Westwood was a regular DJ. The Rex in Stratford was the scene of a shooting in April this year where a doorman was shot dead. At the following week’s Fugazi show, security staff patrolled the venue with attack dogs.
Today’s South London Press reports that in an interview last week Westwood told them that hip hop links to street violence were “bullshit”.
