Tinie Tempah premieres Diplo-produced single ‘Trampoline’ – watch

Rapper talks about his first new track in three years on BBC 1Xtra

Tinie Tempah premiered his first new single in three years this evening (July 2).

The rapper, who hasn’t released a single of his own in the UK since 2011’s ‘Till I’m Gone’, appeared on BBC 1Xtra with DJ MistaJam to talk about the Diplo-produced track and give the song its first play. It’s the first new music to appear from the multi-award-winner’s anticipated second album ‘Demonstration’, the follow-up to his debut album ‘Disc-Overy’, which is due later this year.

Speaking to MistaJam, Tinie thanked fans for their continued patience waiting for the track, which is thought to have been due last year: “No one really know what it’s like when you put out that first album and it exceeds all your expectations. I want to thank fans for giving me the opportunity to travel around the whole world and see music and really study it.

“What people don’t realise is we were bedroom MCs, listening to Dizzee Rascal and Wiley, and we figured out how to do this, so to go from that, to this, going all over the world, I just think I had to really study music does what it does, and how it does that. When I was trying to make my first release from my second album, I wanted to capture that energy.”

Explaining what inspired him to write the track, he said: “Travelling, and studying the music I made and its effect on people, I was able to enjoy the music I made best when I was performing it to large crowds. Some of the most amazing venues in the world. When I’m supporting people, Black Eyed Peas and Rihanna and people, I’ve got 15-20 minutes to wow these people, win the crowd, and one thing I noticed that was consistent with my music was the energy of it. I’m always able to get people jumping, so I tied that in with a joke that people made about me jumping really high. That’s why it’s called ‘Trampoline’.”

Asked if he was touring, he said: “We’re doing a few secret performances at festivals. One thing I love is a good festival and a crowd, but what we’re not doing is announcing where it’ll be. We’re just doing some guerrilla-style things and keep your eyes on the Twitter and Instagram and all will be revealed.”

He also talked of wanting to collaborate with Jay-Z, who has expressed admiration for the Brit rapper’s work, and Kanye West. He said: “People are looking for new things, and the more you can make things exciting the better, and one of the ways you can do that is with a collaboration.”

‘Trampoline’, which features rapper 2 Chainz, will be released on August 4.
