A man was shot and seriously wounded at an MTV-sponsored event in BOURNEMOUTH during the early hours of this morning (December 14).
The man, who has not been named, was shot once in the head from point-blank range. He is in a critical condition in hospital in Poole. Dorset Police say that the victim is a black man in his early 30s who comes from Walthamstow, east London. At the moment, there is no motive for the shooting. A racial element has not been ruled out.
The incident took place in the Elements club in the town. Almost 3,000 people had gathered to see Trevor Nelson at his The Lick Party Night – one of a number of such shows that happen around the country promoting Nelson’s MTV R&B show ‘The Lick’.
The man was shot at around 2.30am. Police arrived at the venue a little later and sealed it off completely. Clubbers were evacuated and searched as they left, though no weapon was recovered. Police are now appealing for information.
No-one else was targeted or injured and the shooting bears the hallmarks of a gangland-style ‘hit’. A police spokesperson would not be drawn on whether the police would follow this line. However, she did say that there was a possibility that the Dorset force would be liaising with officers from the Metropolitan Police who have considerable experience with gang violence and, in ‘Operation Trident’, a special taskforce devoted to the problem.
MTV have released a statement saying: “Our thoughts and best wishes are with the injured and his family at this time.”
