Two Door Cinema Club bring NME Awards Tour to a triumphant close in London

Band tell NME show was their 'best yet' at O2 Academy Brixton

The NME Awards Tour 2012 finished its run last night (February 25) with a triumphant headline slot from Two Door Cinema Club at London’s O2 Academy Brixton.

The Northern Irish band, who were playing the venue for the third time in their career, once again included a number of new songs from their forthcoming second album at the gig, including ‘Handshake’, ‘This Is Moon’ and ‘Sleep Alone’. They finished the night with ‘I Can Talk’, as lights flashed behind them spelling out “Ah-Oh” during each chorus.

Speaking to NME afterwards, bassist Kevin Baird hailed the gig as “incredible”, commenting:

It was the best time we’ve played there [O2 Academy Brixton]. It was special because everything just felt very natural. It almost felt like the last day of school when you’re a kid – it had a real end of school party feeling.

Baird also discussed his injury from the first date of the NME Awards Tour in Glasgow, which left him playing on crutches. He explained: “I pretty much fell at the bottom of the stairs [at O2 Academy Glasgow]. It was just fucking stupid. There’s no rock’n’roll-ness to it at all, I wasn’t even drunk – I really wish I was. But I tore all the ligaments in my ankle. It’s getting there, though. The first week was pretty tough when I was on crutches and I had to sit on a chair when I was on stage.”

Earlier in the night, Azealia Banks kicked off the show and included a short cover of The Prodigy‘s ‘Firestarter’ and a rendition of Amy Winehouse‘s version of The Zutons’ ‘Valerie’ in her set. She was followed by Camden four-piece Tribes, who ran through songs from their debut album ‘Baby’, including ‘When My Day Comes’, ‘Sappho’ and ‘We Were Children’. Metronomy then played a mixture of hits from their latest record ‘The English Riviera’, as well as a few older songs from 2008’s ‘Nights Out’, including ‘The End Of You Too’, ‘Heartbreaker’ and ‘A Thing For Me’.

Two Door Cinema Club played:

‘Cigarettes In The Theatre’
‘Undercover Martyn’

‘Costume Party’
‘You Are Not Stubborn’
‘This Is Moon’
