U2 are among acts cancelling Paris gigs following the violent attacks last night

The French capital goes on lockdown to protect its citizens

U2 have released a statement announcing they’ve cancelled their performance in Paris tonight.

The band were due to play at Accorhotels Arena, but following the shootings at the Eagles Of Death Metal gig last night (November 13), which left 87 dead, they will be rearranging the show for another time.

In the statement, U2 said: “We are devastated at the loss of life at the Eagles of Death Metal concert and our thoughts and prayers are with the band and their fans. And we hope and pray that all of our fans in Paris are safe.”

Elsewhere in the French capital the Metro has been shut down and concert venues, theatres and museums have all been closed.

Al Gore’s 24-hour webcast about climate change, 24 Hours of Reality and Live Earth, which began live streaming at 9am on November 13 and was due to finish this morning, has been suspended. Climate experts and musicians appeared on the broadcast, including Duran Duran. Bon Jovi, Elton John and Pharrell Williams, who were set to perform, now won’t be; Pharrell tweeting “Pray for Paris” from his account.

Deftones were due to play alongside 65daysofstatic tonight at Le Bataclan, the same venue Eagles Of Death Metal performed at last night, but this has been cancelled. As has Lapsley’s gig at La Boule Noire, Electric Six at Badaboum and many more.

Formation, who were due to play Festival Les Inrock, have cancelled all their remaining French dates, writing on Twitter: “Due to last night’s events and out of respect for all those at Le Bataclan we will be cancelling our remaining shows in France.”

President François Hollande blamed the Islamic State group for the terror attacks, which left at least 127 dead. The attack on Bataclan was part of a wide-ranging attack on Paris. French national stadium Stade de France was also targeted, with French police confirming two suicide attacks and one bombing. Elsewhere at least one man opened fire in a restaurant in the 11th district.
