U2 dedicated their song ‘Pride (In The Name Of Love)’ to the historic yes voters of Ireland’s gay marriage referendum at their recent show in Phoenix, Arizona.
The band are currently touring North America as part of their their Innocence + Experience Tour, playing their second show in Phoenix on Saturday (May 23). According to onlookers, Bono changed the song’s lyrics (“Free at last, they took your life. They could not take your pride”) to “They could not take away your gay pride”.
The singer also reportedly told the audience during the performance: “We have peace in Ireland today! And in fact on this very day we have true equality in Ireland!”
The people of Ireland voted in a referendum on gay marriage on Friday (May 22) with the verdict being confirmed on Saturday. The vote was almost two to one in favour of legalising same-sex marriage with all but one of the districts that were counted voted yes. More than 60 percent of the 3.2 million people eligible to vote did so. The result marks a significant result for gay rights activists in Ireland with homosexuality only decriminalised in the country since 1993.
Music stars such as Miley Cyrus, Sam Smith and Drenge has applauded Ireland for legalising gay marriage.
The band’s first show in Phoenix on Friday (May 22) saw a fan invited onto the stage to perform with the group. When a fan requested ‘In God’s Country’, first heard on 1993 album ‘The Joshua Tree’, frontman Bono invited the man up to play guitar alongside the band. “Are you the dude? Do you know the chords?”, Bono asked. After hugging each of the band members the fan began playing the song. After it ended he tried to stay on as the band played but was sent back to his seat by Bono. Watch here.
U2 kicked off their world tour in Vancouver on May 14. The show saw guitarist The Edge falling off the edge of the stage during their final song ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’.
Bono and co also paid tribute to late blues guitarist BB King at a show on May 15, performing their 1988 collaboration ‘When Love Comes To Town’. King passed away the day prior.
