U2 frontman Bono has spoken to nme.com of his delight at new single ‘BEAUTIFUL DAY’ going to number one in the UK.

“It’s a very beautiful day,” he said. “It’s the best day ever. During the week I was saying to everyone ‘I don’t care, we’re a rock band, we don’t need the pop charts’. But actually I’m just so thrilled. The band are very excited, maybe the most excited we’ve ever been about getting to number one.”

The track, the first from forthcoming album ‘All That You Can’t Leave Behind’ yesterday (October 15) knocked All Saints from their perch and kept the Robbie Williams/Kylie Minogue duet ‘Kids’ at number two.

Bono concluded: “After being away for a couple of years, it’s really great. Thanks to everyone who went out and bought it.”
