In January, the singer-songwriter – real name Mark Kozelek – revealed that the new Sun Kil Moon album will be a very different album” than last year’s critically-lauded ‘Benji’.

In an interview with The Omaha-World Herald, Kozelek claimed he was “halfway” through the record and “hopefully it could be out by fall”.

“[Sonic Youth drummer] Steve Shelley was telling me the other night, ‘This next one needs to be really good,’ and my hope is that it will be,” he said. “But it’s going to be what it’s going to be. Different things are happening in my life now, so there is no doubt that it will be a very different album.”

‘Universal Themes’ is released via Rough Trade on June 2.
