Latest release in compilation franchise sells 283,000 copies in one week
‘Now 89’, the latest release in the ‘Now That’s What I Call Music!’ franchise, has become the fastest selling album of the year so far.
Official Chart Company data shows that the album has sold 283,000 copies since its release on November 24, a UK record for 2014. The previous fastest selling album of the year was ‘Now 88’, which sold 224,000 copies upon release in July.
The fastest selling artist album of the year is Ed Sheeran‘s ‘x’ (pictured right), which shifted 182,000 copies when it came out in June. Before that, the record belonged to Coldplay and their new album ‘Ghost Stories’.
‘Now 89’ includes some of this year’s biggest hit singles with nine Number Ones on the two-disc tracklist. As well as songs by Meghan Trainor, Calvin Harris, David Guetta and Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj (pictured above) is Tom Odell’s cover of John Lennon song ‘Real Love’, as featured on this year’s John Lewis Christmas advert.
Meanwhile, Band Aid 30’s charity single holds the title for fastest-selling single of 2014 so far after shifting 312,000 copies in seven days earlier this month. The new version of ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ has been recorded to raise money to help combat the spread of Ebola. One Direction, Elbow, Bastille, Queen’s Roger Taylor, Rita Ora, Jessie Ware, Ed Sheeran, Clean Bandit, Paloma Faith, Emeli Sandé and Ellie Goulding all took part in the recording of the track.
