At least two people have been killed in a shooting at a nightclub in Florida in the early hours of this morning (July 25).
Between 14 and 16 other people were injured in the shooting, which took place in the car park of Club Blu in the city of Fort Myers, Reuters reports.
The city’s police department has said that injuries “ranged from minor to life-threatening”. Some local news services are reporting that the club was hosting a teen night when the attack occurred, but this has yet to be confirmed by police. A local hospital has said those injured are aged between 12 and 27.
Syreeta Gary, whose daughter was at Club Blu when the attack occurred and escaped unscathed, told local TV station Fox 4: “I just thank god that my daughter is okay, because she could have been shot. Her dodging bullets and running and dropping between cars, it’s ridiculous that these kids have to go through this. They can’t enjoy themselves because you have other people that have criminal minds and they just want to terrorise things.”
The Fort Myers shooting comes within six weeks of another gun attack at a Florida nightclub. The shooting on June 12 at gay nightclub Pulse in Orlando, around 200 miles south of Fort Myers, was the deadliest mass shooting in US history with the death toll reaching 49.
