Groove Armada, Skream, Annie Mac and more will DJ the big spider
Glastonbury has announced this year’s line-up for the festival’s Arcadia area.
DJs including Groove Armada, Skream, The Bug, Loefah, Annie Mac and Congo Natty will appear atop the mechanical spider, where music begins playing at 11pm every night within a “360 degree inward facing soundfield”.
In an statement released today (May 29), the festival said: “Space agencies, research laboratories and a global network of telescopes have detected a transformation in the Spider’s quantum field. After intensive analysis, scientists believe they have seen the Spider begin to gestate, though uncertainty rages over the cryptic spheres that flash across the observational spectrum.”
Meanwhile, Glastonbury co-organiser Emily Eavis has revealed that she received death threats after booking Kanye West to headline this year’s festival.
West’s appearance was confirmed in March by Eavis herself, who tweeted the news. “We are thrilled to let you know we have the one and only Kanye West headlining Saturday night on the Pyramid stage,” she posted.
But in what has resembled the backlash sparked by the booking of Jay Z in 2008, some festival-goers have been angered by the selection, with an online petition calling for Kanye to be replaced by a rock band attracting more than 133,000 signatures.
In a new interview with The Times, Eavis, who organises the festival with her father, Glastonbury founder Michael, has asserted that attracting West is “an amazing coup”, but said some of the abuse she’s received has been “just horrible”.
“It was not a pleasant world we unwrapped,” said Eavis.
“I had death threats and stuff. It was just horrible. It was just crazy. It was getting out of control. We had Time magazine, all the American news channels saying they were going to come down. This incredible onslaught worldwide.
“It was quite upsetting, because we were talking about something that was so exciting and interesting and fresh and brilliant for the festival. Kanye West is making the most exciting music at the moment. He is an amazing force as a performer. For us, getting the biggest star in the world was an amazing coup.”
