Greenbaum was the original composer of the song, later covered by Bauhaus and Gareth Gates

Norman Greenbaum, best known as the original composer of ‘Spirit In The Sky’, has been involved in a car crash in Northern California.

The incident took place in Santa Rosa on Saturday (March 28), with reports stating that Greenbaum, 72, was critically injured in a crash that killed a motorcyclist.

Greenbaum was reportedly a passenger in the car involved. Meanwhile, a passenger on the motorcycle is also in a critical condition. The driver of the car was not injured and police say that alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

‘Spirit In The Sky’ was originally written and recorded by Greenbaum in 1969. It reached Number One in the UK chart and Number Three in the US. It was later covered by the likes of Bauhaus, Doctor and the Medics and Gareth Gates, the latter two versions also topping the UK singles chart in 1986 and 2003 respectively.
