One Direction dedicate their Top Group award win to former member Zayn Malik

Taylor Swift and Sam Smith were the evening’s big winners at this year’s Billboard Music Awards was held on Sunday night (May 17) in Las Vegas.

Swift picked up accolades in eight of the 14 categories that she was nominated in, while Smith, who was unable to attend due to recent vocal cord troubles, won awards for Top New Artist, Top Male Artist and Top Digital Songs Artist. Smith accepted his awards by sending a video message, which saw him using flash cards to communicate.

One Direction, also winners on the night, dedicated their Top Group award win to “brother” Zayn Malik, who parted ways with the pop group in March. “I just want to say, Billboard, you guys have been so amazing throughout our career, thank you for the support and as well as our fans, there’s one more person to share this with and that’s our brother Zayn, so thank you very much,” Liam Payne said during the boyband’s acceptance speech.

Meanwhile, Iggy Azalea won the Top Rap Artist award, Hozier was crowned Top Rock Artist, Calvin Harris picked up the Top Dance/Electronic Artist award and Coldplay won Top Rock Album for ‘Ghost Stories’. See the full list of winners below.
