Hyperdub artist The Spaceape, aka Stephen Samuel Gordon, dies of rare form of cancer

Django Django, Flying Lotus and more pay tribute

Hyperdub artist The Spaceape, aka Stephen Samuel Gordon, died yesterday, his label have confirmed.

The vocalist, poet and MC had lived with a rare form of cancer for five years.

A statement from Hyperdub, posted to the label’s Facebook page, revealed the news.

The statement reads: “We are devastated to announce that on Thursday 2nd October, Stephen Samuel Gordon aka The Spaceape, vocalist, poet and live performer, passed away peacefully after a five-year struggle with a rare form of cancer. He leaves behind his wife Luciana and 6-year-old daughter, Cleo.”

It concludes: “Our sincere condolences go out to his family and friends, and all who have been touched by his writings and performances. His Hyperdub family will always miss him.”

The Spaceape and Kode9’s ‘Sine Of The Dub’ was Hyperdub’s first ever release in 2004. A frequent collaborator with Kode9, the pair released two albums together – ‘Memories Of The Future’ in 2006 and ‘Black Sun’ in 2011. His latest EP with Kode9, ‘Killing Season’, was released last week.

The performer appeared on the track ‘Spaceape’ on Burial’s 2006 debut and also collaborated with The Bug, Martyn, Jerry Dammers, Redshape, Dub Gabriel, the Echologist and more.
