Social network rolls out new musical discovery app
Twitter has launched a new music service today, which will enable users able to keep a close track on the bands and artists being discussed on the social network.
The new music app recommends tracks to users based on who they follow with songs being steamed directly via iTunes, Spotify and Rdio. No other streaming services are currently connected to the app. Users can get new music tips direct from the artists they follow and marks Twitter’s biggest move toward incorporating music into its service since launching in 2006.
At present, Twitter’s app – called #Music – is available to download for the Apple iPhone with a web browser version being rolled out shortly. The app is not yet available for Android or Windows Phone and can only be downloaded by users in the UK and Ireland, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. More countries are expected to be added soon.
Stating that half of all network’s users follow at least one musician, Stephen Philips of Twitter explained: “It uses Twitter activity, including tweets and engagement, to detect and surface the most popular tracks and emerging artists.
“It also brings artists’ music-related Twitter activity front and centre: go to their profiles to see who they follow and listen to songs by those artists. This is why artists turn to Twitter first to connect with their fans — and why we wanted to find a way to surface songs people are tweeting about.”
Twitter announced that it would be launching the app in March having acquired music discovery service We Are Hunted earlier this month.
