Arctic Monkeys to headline first day of Glastonbury 2013

Dizzee Rascal, Portishead and Beady Eye also set to play today (June 27) as Worthy Farm festival begins

Arctic Monkeys will close the first day of Glastonbury 2013, which kicks off today (June 28), with a bill including performances from Dizzee Rascal, Portishead and Beady Eye.

Beady Eye will reportedly be the first band of the weekend to play when they step up to the Other Stage at 11am, an unannounced band appearing as one of Glastonbury’s now famous secret gigs. The gig was revealed on Wednesday by Liam Gallagher who tweeted: “11am Friday – BE there or BE square,” referencing the title of new album ‘BE’.

Haim will play the Pyramid Stage at 12:30pm, marking the US band’s first Glastonbury appearance. They will be followed by Jake Bugg, with Rita Ora and Professor Green set to follow later in the afternoon. As the evening descends, The Vaccines will take to the festival’s Main Stage followed by Dizzee Rascal who will warm up for Arctic Monkeys, the band he joined onstage when they last headlined in 2007.

Arctic Monkeys’ headline performance will mark the band’s second time on top of the Glastonbury bill, and comes in the same week the band announced details of their fifth album ‘AM’. Speaking about the band’s Glastonbury show, drummer Matt Helders recently revealed they would “have fun” with the setlist.

Over on the Other Stage, The Hives, Enter Shikari and Tame Impala will all perform live throughout the day before Mercury Prize winners Alt-J play their second, and biggest, gig of the festival. Last night (June 27), Alt-J played the first secret show of Glastonbury 2013 when they made an impromptu appearance in the William’s Green area. The Other Stage will be headlined by Portishead with Foals bringing their latest album ‘Holy Fire’ to Glastonbury when they appear directly before the West Country band.

Other bands and artists set to perform live on Friday include chart-toppers Disclosure, Miles Kane, Swim Deep, Crystal Castles, Palma Violets, The Horrors, Django Django and Chic feat. Nile Rodgers.
