Gervais will star in a new mockumentary next year
Ricky Gervais has reprised his role as Wernham Hogg office manager and aspiring rock musician David Brent to release a track dedicated to the Berkshire town where BBC mockumentary ‘The Office’ was set during its 2001-2003 run.
Titled ‘Slough’, the song was part of Gervais’s Bloomsbury Theatre set last year, when the actor performed his first concerts as David Brent & Foregone Conclusion with a backing band that included former Razorlight member Andy Burrows. Click below to listen to the newly released demo.
Gervais is preparing to resurrect the character onscreen in new mockumentary Life On The Road, which follows Brent as he tries to reignite his musical career. Speaking about the project in August, the 53-year-old revealed his vision for Brent.
“Imagine if that was a real documentary – The Office – and David Brent was the person he was… He’d still be trying to be famous. You wouldn’t go back and find him in the office – you would go back and find him repping like he is now, still trying to be a pop star and trying to get Simon Cowell‘s eye and trying to have his own YouTube channel.”
Fans of The Office will be familiar with Brent’s older songs like ‘Spaceman Came Down’ and ‘Free Love Freeway’, as well as his ill-fated cover of soul group Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes’ ‘If You Don’t Know Me By Now’. Gervais also starred in a series of YouTube videos last year titled ‘Learn Guitar With David Brent’.
