Musicians support first woman to contest the US election
Clinton was officially named the Democrat party candidate to take on Republican party hopeful Donald Trump in the election on November 8. She beat businessman Bernie Sanders to win the Democrat nomination.
Using the hashtag #ImWith Her, several musicians quickly endorsed Clinton for the election. Katy Perry wrote: “A lot of little girls are in bed right now dreaming for the first time, without limits. You broke the mould, @HillaryClinton.”
Lady Gaga added: “Vote for first female US president in history. This country could use a little rock n’ roll,” while John Legend simply added: “Congratulations to @HillaryClinton on her historic win.”
Clinton’s husband Bill Clinton was US President from 1992-2000. He tweeted: “I keep saying Hillary is the ultimate changemaker, and tonight she proved it. I couldn’t be more proud. History made.”
Cher and Christina Aguilera were among the other musicians to tweet their support for Clinton.
Several musicians including Morrissey had backed Clinton’s rival Sanders, but Azaelia Banks and Kid Rock are the only notable musicians so far to back Trump for the Presidency.
