Wigan Athletic footballer Will Grigg’s chant is a chart high climber

‘Will Grigg’s On Fire’ is in honour of Northern Ireland striker

The cult song about Wigan Athletic striker Will Grigg is one of the highest climbers in the official trending chart.

‘Will Grigg’s On Fire’ was written by YouTuber and Wigan fan Sean Kennedy, based on Gala’s 1997 rave hit ‘Freed From Desire’.

Grigg helped Wigan gain promotion from League One into the Championship this season and has been named as part of Northern Ireland’s squad for Euro 2016, which kicks off on Friday (June 10). He was signed from Brentford for £1 million in 2015 and scored 25 goals in Wigan’s promotion campaign.

Kennedy’s song includes the lyrics “He will score goals, he will just score more and more/He will score goals, that’s what we signed him for/Will Grigg’s on fire/Your defence is terrified”.

‘Will Grigg’s On Fire’ was made into a full single by house duo Blonde, whose Top 20 singles include ‘I Loved You’, ‘All Cried Out’ and Craig David collaboration ‘Nothing Like This’. Released under the alias DJ Kenno, the single is No 11 on this week’s Official Trending Chart from chart compilers Official Charts Company.

Kennedy was given a free season ticket for next season by Wigan Athletic chairman David Sharpe, who called ‘Will Grigg’s On Fire’ “The greatest chant known to man.” The chant has become such a cult among Wigan fans that it has impacted on Grigg’s Wikipedia page. It was hacked repeatedly last week with fans quoting the song’s lyrics in the history section of the page and has had to be constantly amended.
