X Factor winner Sam Bailey on course for Christmas Number One

Beyoncé's new album only just makes the Top Five in the albums chart

X factor winner Sam Bailey is on course to win this year’s race for Christmas Number One.

The singer and former prison guard has sold more than 67,000 downloads of her cover of Demi Lovato’s ‘Skyscraper’, which is two-and-a-half times more than her closest rival, Pharrell Williams with his track ‘Happy’, which is at Number Two in the midweek chart update. Another former X Factor winner Leona Lewis is currently at Number Three with her track ‘One More Sleep’ ahead of Avicii at Number Four with ‘Hey Brother’ and AC/DC’s ‘Highway To Hell’ at Number Five.

The Official Christmas Singles Chart Top 40 will be announced on Sunday (December 22) at 7pm.

On the Official Albums Chart, Beyoncé’s self-titled surprise new album is still only at Number Five. One Direction are currently at Number One, having overtaken Robbie Williams at the midweek stage with their new album ‘Midnight Memories’. Despite being released just three-and-a-half weeks ago, the band’s latest album is already the fourth biggest selling album of this year. However, just 6,500 copies separate all of the Top Three albums with Williams’ ‘Swing Both Ways’ at Number Two and Gary Barlow’s ‘Since I Saw You Last’ at Number Three.

If ‘Midnight Memories’ sales continue at their current rate One Direction could overtake Emeli Sande’s ‘Our Version Of Events’ to become 2013’s biggest selling album.

This week’s Top Five is completed by Olly Murs’ Right Place, Right Time (a non-mover at Number 4).
