One Direction’s support band and X Factor winner top charts

5 Seconds Of Summer and Sam Bailey at No 1 in the single and album charts

Australian pop band 5 Seconds Of Summer have entered the UK single chart at No 1 with their debut single ‘She Looks So Perfect’. The Sydney four-piece began by covering Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran on YouTube, before supporting One Direction on tour.

They are the fourth Australian band to top the singles chart and the first since Madison Avenue, who reached No 1 in 2000 with ‘Don’t Call Me Baby’.

Other Top 40 new entries are by Faul & Wad Ad (No 3), Martin Garrix (7), Chris Brown (15), Sneakbo (21), Haim (33) and Shakira (39).

On the album chart, Sam Bailey has become the first winner of The X Factor to score a UK No 1 album since Alexandra Burke’s ‘Overcome’ in 2009. Her album ‘The Power Of Love’ has sold nearly 73,000 copies, becoming the fastest-selling release of 2014, beating Pharrell Williams’ ‘G I R L’.

Wilko Johnson & Roger Daltrey enter at No 3 with their joint album ‘Going Back Home’. It was recorded after Johnson was diagnosed last October with terminal cancer, and becomes his first UK Top 10 album since ‘Sneakin’ Suspicion’ with his former band Dr Feelgood in 1977.

Other Top 40 album new entries include Elton John (12), My Chemical Romance (15), Magnum (38) and Jimi Goodwin (39).
