Helen Mirren leaves festival dance tent after complaining music was too loud

The actress was at the As One In The Park event in London's Victoria Park

Helen Mirren left a festival dance tent this weekend after complaining that the music was too loud.

The actress was at the As One In The Park gay festival in the capital’s Victoria Park, which saw performances from Rita Ora, Katy B and Conor Maynard amongst others. “It is a bit noisy for me because I’m too old but I’m having a lovely day,” she told The Metro after exiting the VIP area, which had a tent with pumping dance music.

Mirren was at the festival in support of the Batala London carnival drumming band, who suffered the wrath of the actress last week when they were promoting the event by performing outside the Gielgud Theatre, where Mirren was playing the role of The Queen in The Audience. The drumming was so loud that during the interval Mirren dashed outside, still dressed as Her Majesty, to confront the drummers.

Mark McKenzie, who organised the parade, said: “Not much shocks you on the gay scene. But seeing Helen Mirren dressed as the Queen cussing and swearing and making you stop your parade – that’s a new one.”

Speaking about the incident later, Helen Mirren said: “I’m afraid there were a few ‘thespian’ words used. They got a very stern royal ticking off but I have to say they were very sweet and they stopped immediately. I felt rotten but on the other hand they were destroying our performance so something had to be done.

“The drumming just slowly got louder and louder and then settled right outside the stage door. There was just a thin wall between drumming and the theatre so it was unbelievably loud on stage. They were very sweet and stopped the minute they knew I wasn’t just a batty old woman haranguing them on the streets of Soho on a Saturday night.”

Helen Mirren can next be seen (well, heard) starring in Monsters University, which arrives in UK cinemas on July 12.
