Music world reacts to death of ‘Glee’ star Cory Monteith

Rihanna, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and fellow 'Glee' actors all pay their respects

Musicians including Rihanna, Taylor Swift and members of One Direction have reacted to the death of Glee star Cory Monteith.

The actor, who played Finn Hudson in the hit US series, was found dead in his room at Vancouver’s Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel on Saturday (July 13). Hotel staff entered his room after the actor had missed his check-out time.

Rihanna was among the music stars to react to the news. The pop singer posted a message on Twitter which read: “Cory Monteith, may your spirit be at peace, and may you fly with the angels… Heartbreaking, my prayers are with all of his loved ones!” Meanwhile, Katy Perry wrote: “Rest in peace Cory. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones. Our prayers are with you.”

Monteith’s fellow Glee stars have spoken out about his death, with Matthew Morrison addressing his audience at a concert in New York and reportedly saying he found it “awkward” to be performing so close to his friends death. He added: “You guys came to see a show, I came to perform a show, so that’s what we’ll do. And we’ll do it in Cory’s honour.” Meanwhile, representatives for Lea Michele, who was believed to be dating Monteith at the time of his death, issued the following statement: “We ask that everyone kindly respect Lea’s privacy during this devastating time.”

Hotel security footage shows that Monteith returned to his hotel room alone in the early hours of Saturday morning, having been with other people on Friday night. Addressing reporters at a press conference, local coroner Lisa Lapointe confirmed that police and paramedics found no signs of foul play.

Monteith had a history of substance abuse and spent just under a month in a rehab facility earlier this year after voluntarily checking himself in on March 31. When asked by reporters if the actor died of a drug overdose, Doug LePard of the Vancouver Police Department said that he would “not discuss anything that we might have found in the room at this time”. An autopsy is scheduled for today (July 15).

Monteith had played Finn Hudson on Glee since the show premiered in 2009, having previously made appearances in numerous US TV series including Smallville, Supernatural and Kyle XY. Monteith was born on May 11, 1982 in Calgary, Canada to Ann, an interior decorator and Joe, a former member of the Canadian military. He is survived his parents and older brother, Shaun.
